Course Competencies

The competencies you will demonstrate in this course are as follows:

A. Demonstrate an understanding of professionalism in Early Childhood Education including: following the National

Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Code of Ethical Conduct; demonstrating professional

oral and written communication skills; working collaboratively as a team; identifying ways to advocate for early

childhood education; and exploring career options.

B. Identify developmental milestones for children ages birth through age 8 years in each developmental domain.

C. Describe best practices for health, safety and nutrition for young children and apply state regulatory requirements

for nutrition, health, and safety in the early childhood setting.

D. Define developmentally and culturally appropriate practices for programs serving young children.

E. Explain basic early childhood and early childhood special education terminology.

F. Identify strategies for building relationships with families and the local community.

G. Explore bias-free attitudes and practices for supporting diversity and inclusion in early childhood programs.

H. Identify appropriate guidance techniques and classroom management strategies.

I. Demonstrate basic knowledge of national, state, and local regulatory agencies and quality initiatives.

J. Practice child observation skills used in early childhood program settings, including direct and

indirect observation, and objective documentation.

K. Identify links between observation and assessments to create individualized learning goals.

L. Identify the importance of communicating observation and assessment information to families in a sensitive manner

Course Time Commitment and Expectations

For every credit hour, students should plan to spend an average of 2-3 hours per week for course-related activities in a 15-week course. For example, a 3 credit hour course would average an average 6-9 hours per week to read/listen to the online content, participate in discussion forums, complete assignments, and study the course material. For 10  and 6-week courses, the amount of time per week will be higher so all course competencies, module outcomes, and assignments will be covered.

Mark all Module due dates on your calendar for this class. You may submit assignments AHEAD of schedule.

Late Work Policies

This is not a self-paced course. The expectation of the ECE/EDU program at CCCOnline is that students will meet assignment dues dates. Late assignments will not be accepted without prior approval. Therefore, it is expected that you contact your instructor prior to when the deadline has lapsed. There may be exceptions due to special circumstances such as medical emergency, military deployment, or in some legal cases. In these rare situations, it is at the instructor’s discretion to accept late work or make modification to the course schedule.
