Course Competencies

The competencies you will demonstrate in this course are as follows:

  1. Identify the objects on the Windows desktop.
  2. Define file control commands.
  3. Discover how to use the speller, thesaurus, grammar checker, and autocorrect.
  4. Identify and use the components of the Word Window.
  5. Discover how to use the Word Help System to get Help.
  6. Identify the toolbars and menus in the Word Window.
  7. Demonstrate how to attach templates and styles in a Word document.
  8. Use a data disk and/or flash drive.
  9. Demonstrate how to move, copy, delete, and rename a file on a data disk or between drives.
  10. Create, edit save, retrieve, and print documents using Word.
  11. Demonstrate how to use the format painter, bullets, find and
    replace text, changing margins, left, right, and center alignment, and
    paragraph indents.
  12. Demonstrate how to use cut, copy, and paste commands.
  13. Create a multiple-page report using page numbering, headers,
    footers, tables, vertical alignment, table of contents, and tabs.
  14. Merge files to create a personalized form letter.
  15. Create, format, and print mailing labels.
  16. Create a telephone list.
  17. Create a newsletter using WordArt, Newspaper style columns,
    Clip Art, Drop Caps, Wrapping Text Around a Graphic and add a page
    border.
  18. Create, edit, and format a mail merge main and data document.

Course Time Commitment and Expectations

For every credit hour, students should plan to spend an average of 2-3 hours per week for course-related activities in a 15-week course. For example, a 3 credit hour course would average an average 6-9 hours per week to read/listen to the online content, participate in discussion forums, complete assignments, and study the course material. For 10  and 6-week courses, the amount of time per week will be higher so all course competencies, module outcomes, and assignments will be covered.
